ACCURATE PRODUCT POSITIONING
ODF Is Not Just Storage — It Is
OpenShift-Native Data Services
OpenShift Data Foundation provides persistent storage and cluster data management for OpenShift. It is designed to
deliver storage services inside the OpenShift platform, using Ceph-based software-defined storage, Ceph CSI, NooBaa
object services, and operators for lifecycle management.
OpenShift-Native Storage
Integrated persistent storage for OpenShift applications, infrastructure services, and cloud-native workloads.
Ceph-Based Architecture
Provides block, shared file, and object storage capabilities using Ceph technologies managed through OpenShift operators.
Ceph CSI Integration
Enables Kubernetes persistent volume provisioning and lifecycle operations for applications running on OpenShift.
NooBaa Object Services
Provides object storage and multicloud object gateway capabilities for cloud-native and S3-compatible use cases.
DEPLOYMENT MODELS
Correct ODF Deployment Positioning
ODF should be designed based on OpenShift workload needs, failure domains, capacity growth, performance,
availability, and whether storage is internal to the cluster or consumed through a supported external storage architecture.
Internal Mode
ODF Inside OpenShift
ODF runs within the OpenShift cluster and provides software-defined storage services for applications and platform services using local or attached storage devices.
External Mode
External Ceph Consumption
ODF can be deployed to consume services from an external Red Hat Ceph Storage cluster, making Ceph-backed storage available to OpenShift workloads.
Virtualization
Storage for OpenShift Virtualization
ODF can provide persistent storage for virtual machines running on OpenShift Virtualization, depending on sizing, performance, and availability requirements.
External Arrays
Enterprise Storage via CSI
External enterprise storage such as Pure Storage, NetApp, Fujitsu, or IBM FlashSystem should be positioned separately through CSI drivers, snapshots, replication, and platform integration — not confused with ODF’s internal Ceph-based SDS role.
WHAT ODF PROVIDES
Storage Services for OpenShift
Applications
Block Storage
Persistent block volumes for workloads that require dedicated volume access, including databases and stateful services.
Object Storage
S3-compatible object storage use cases for cloud-native applications, backup targets, media storage, and data services.
Shared File Storage
Shared file access for workloads such as CI/CD tools, data aggregation, application services, and shared content needs.
OpenShift Platform Services
Storage support for OpenShift internal services such as registry, logging, monitoring, and platform data requirements.
OpenShift Virtualization
Persistent storage foundation for virtual machines running alongside containers on OpenShift.
Cloud-Native Data Services
Storage foundation for modern applications that need consistent provisioning, portability, and Kubernetes-native operations.
